While vacationing Down Under, the mystery-solving quintet decides to head into the Australian outback to take in the sights and a rock festival competition held at Vampire Rock. But, of course, that is not to be. “Vampires” have been swooping down from the craggy cliffs and abducting the talent, forcing the detectives to go undercover as a rock band. (Their song? Predictably, “Scooby-Doo, Where Are You?”) The aboriginal myth of Yowie Yahoo is thrown in, along with two aboriginal characters. Adults may have trouble keeping the glam-rock musicians separate from the vampires, but kids will follow enough of the complex plot and high-tech resolution. This 70-minute movie is a contemporary take on the vintage television series with Casey Kasem repeating the honors as the voice of Shaggy. While some of the flower-power looniness of the original is gone, the basic spirit of classic Scooby-Doo remains intact. (Ages 3 and older) –Kimberly Heinrichs

Roger and Me is a loose, smart-alecky documentary directed and narrated by Michael Moore, an everyman host with a devastating wit and a working-class pose. When his hometown is devastated by the plant closure of an American corporate giant (making record profits, one should note), the hell-raising political commentator with a prankster streak tries to turn his camera on General Motors Chairman Roger B. Smith, the elusive Roger of the title, and the film is loosely structured around Moore’s odyssey to track down the corporate giant for an interview.
While Moore ambushes his corporate subjects like a blu-collar Geraldo Rivera, a gurrilla interviewer who treasures his comic rebuffs as much as his interviews, his portraits of the colorful characters he meets along the way can be patronizing. The famous come off as absurdly out of touch (Anita Bryant appears for some can-do cheerleading, and hometown celebrity Bob Eubanks tells some boorish jokes), and the disenfranchised poor (notably an unemployed woman who sells rabbit meat to make ends meet) all too often appear as buffoons or hicks. But behind his loose play with the facts and snarky attitude is a devastating look at the victims of downsizing in the midst of the 1980s economic boom. This portrait of Reagan’s America and the tarnish on the American dream comes down to a simple qustion: what is corporate America’s responsibility to the country’s citizens? Manga artist Shotaro Ishinomori’s reworking of “Pinocchio” was made into a live-action series in 1972; this later anime version (2000) is done in a retro style that reflects the influnce of Osamu Tezuka and some American cartoons. Professor Komyoji is killed in his lab while creating Jiro, a super-android who looks like a human–until he morphs into his battle form. What sets Jiro apart is the “Gemini Circuit” that gives him a conscience. Jiro meets Komyoji’s daughter Mitsuko and son Masaru, who initially welcome him. But when Mitsuko checks her father’s data, she learns that the Gemini Circuit is flawed: if it cannot be repaired, Jiro must be destroyed. Jiro flees, but finds himself battling the insect-like mecha sent by the evil Dr. Gill. The basic story is familiar, but it’s presented with more feeling than most mecha tales.
